Red days and holidays in Spain

If you are a fan of public holidays and Fiestas then Spain is the place to live for sure!

Each region observes the National holidays that are set by the government but in addition will have their own local holidays and fiestas, which can be based on local, religious or cultural importance.

You should be aware that if a National holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday this can cause considerable disruption as employees will almost certainly take what is called a bridge holiday (Puente) which consists of 4 days of “dia festivos” which are festive holidays.

In addition, if a national Red Day (bank holiday) falls on a weekend, this can be substituted with a day the following week.

Regional Spanish holidays are often at the same time as large Spanish festivals and while this is an excellent opportunity to embrace Spanish culture and food, they are also times when accommodation for example will be in short supply.

There are approximately 9 national holidays each year with regional holidays and festivals being in addition to this so, be sure to prepare in advance so you don’t get caught out.
