Lasting Powers of Confusion

I conducted a little research between Christmas and New Year into the costs of organising Lasting Powers of Attorney.

Quite frankly I was SHOCKED!

As a consumer, I want to know what the TOTAL price is going to be for what I want and that what I am apparently being offered IS what I want.

Top 3 confusing pricing structures

  1. Do not include v.a.t – a price coming to £650 for 1 x Power for Health and 1 x Power for Finance actually means £780 including v.at.

  2. Do not mention the Office of the Public Guardian fees of £82 per power meaning that same price of £650 now jumps to £944

  3. Are not clear that there are in fact 2 Powers of Attorney you need so quotes stating just £250 to arrange your Lasting Power of Attorney then becomes £500 and then the vat makes it £600 and the fees bring it up to £764

One of the above methods was used by a national household name – check for yourself when you search ‘’cheapest LPAs’ on Google.

Sometimes the fact that the registration fee with the Office of the Public Guardian is £82 per power is right at the bottom of the page, long after the click here to start your application for just £350 appears for example.
