Warning that complex probate should be left to experts

A post-Covid rise in disputed wills has led to warnings from experts that complex probate should be left to the experts.

Contested probate cases in England and Wales rose by 50% in 2019 and 2020, and the trend is expected to continue.

Experts fear that bereaved families are trying to save money by dealing with probate themselves and are consequently missing out on thousands of pounds in tax relief on estates and are not administering Trusts in the correct way to protect beneficiaries.

It is very common for us to have to take over the estate administration when probate becomes contentious, only to find that allowances and entitlements have not been claimed.

All our clients are given a certificate of guarantee stating that we will conduct full probate on their estate when the time comes for just 1.75% of the estate value + vat and, if they have taken out our PCC protection (see here https://www.thywill.co.uk/priority-client-cover-insurance-wills) that fee is halved to just 0.88%
